UK cloud services tenders: a supplier screening guide
Cloud migration, cloud hosting and managed cloud operations are different commitments. A supplier can have strong expertise in one and still be poorly suited to a contract combining all three. Start by separating the workstreams.
Define your cloud service boundary
List the activities you deliver: discovery, architecture, migration, platform engineering or ongoing operations. Add your supported technologies and locations to your internal review brief. Do not treat a platform name in a notice as sufficient evidence of fit; it may refer to the estate being replaced rather than the target environment.
Identify transition and steady-state work
Look for who owns discovery, data migration, cutover, support and exit. A project notice may include years of operations after the transition. When the excerpt is unclear, move the item to document review and identify the unanswered question. Avoid using a single keyword to collapse the entire lifecycle into one service.
Check assumptions before estimating effort
The full tender pack may explain volumes, dependencies, existing contracts, delivery constraints or service levels. Your technical and commercial owners should inspect those details before estimating the work. Data-location requirements, security evidence and contractual commitments require their own checks; J8VEST’s excerpt screen does not verify them.
Write exclusions that improve triage
A useful profile might focus on cloud migration engineering and exclude licence resale, hardware supply and 24-hour managed operations. That gives the first review a practical boundary. Keep a record of false positives so the next profile refinement addresses the source of the mismatch, not just the wording of one notice.
Keep this checklist
- Separate migration from ongoing operation.
- Confirm the role of any named cloud platform.
- Check transition, support and exit responsibilities.
Official starting points
Use GOV.UK’s Find a Tender entry point and the official Find a Tender service for the original notices. The workflows and fictional examples above are J8VEST’s practical suggestions, not government guidance or a claim about a live procurement.
